Just seven miles from the historic cathedral city of Canterbury lies a delightful harbour town of Whitstable. Where else but Whitstable would you find a wood-panelled cinema and a superb seafood restaurant housed in an old oyster warehouse on the beach? Where would you find names like 'Squeeze Gut Alley' and ‘Dollar Row’ but in its narrow streets of whitewashed, weather-boarded cottages?

The little craft shops in Harbour Street overflow with hand-made treasures and whimsical trinkets. Head for the working harbour or the beach and some sea-going spectaculars, whether it’s the International Water-ski Championship, or the more traditional Thames Barge Regatta.

It is a popular venue for water sports whether sailing or windsurfing as well as the oyster festival in July, which emphasises its maritime heritage. Stroll the Saxon Shore Way and along the exhilarating cliff-top lawns of Tankerton Slopes, east of the town centre, with a perfect view of 'The Street' - a narrow shingle ridge, visible at low tide stretching ½ mile out to sea.
